Conference Summary

American Society of Tropical and Hygiene (ASTMH

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
October 25-29, 2015

I would like to thank you for selecting me as a recipient. Without this award I would not have had the opportunity to attend the American Society of Tropical and Hygiene (ASTMH) conference in Philadelphia.

At the ASTMH conference I was registered to give a 10-minute oral presentation on my current research. The title of my presentation was “Impact of increased insulin signaling in the fat body of Anopheles stephensi on lifespan and reproduction.”  During my presentation session, there were many well-recognized scientists in the field of mosquito research.  It was honor to have the opportunity to share my research with this audience.  At the end of my presentation, I received several questions regarding my research findings. These questions were thoughtful, and challenged me to think quickly about the answers without prior preparation.

In addition, my attendance at this conference allowed me to engage with other researchers on the most current trends and topics within my field of interest.   During each session, I had the opportunity to participate in the question and answer forums.  This allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge on current and past research topics, beyond what is published in the literature.

At this conference, I was also looking forward to making connections for potential research collaborations. After my presentation, I was approach by several individuals who were interested in my findings.  Our conversations let to several ideas for potential future collaborative projects and postdoc opportunities.

Overall, my experience at the ASTMH conference this year was wonderful and fruitful. I was able to present my current research and represent the University of Arizona’s Graduate Interdisciplinary Program on the international level. I was also able to make valuable connections and open opportunities for future research collaborations.  All of these experiences would not have been possible for me without the support of the H.E Carter Travel Award.  Again, thank you so much for your generous support and generosity.

Sincerely,

Lewis Hun
