Applied Intercultural Arts Research

Established by the Arizona Board of Regents: MA; PhD 2018

Applied Intercultural Arts Research (AIAR) is the first Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) designed in collaboration with the UA College of Fine Arts. The program prepares graduates with the training and skills needed to conduct intercultural research in the arts, and to consider how knowledge of the arts can be applied to other disciplinary areas to address humanistic, social, and scientific issues affecting our communities and our interconnected world.

AIAR promotes dialogue between interdisciplinary scholars with a primary or secondary research interest related to music, dance, theater, film, visual arts, or other artistic cultural practices. The applied emphasis invites students to imagine how the arts can be used in and beyond academic settings to enhance the health and well-being of individuals, societies, and environments. The intercultural focus trains students to use arts-based research to address issues in ways that take into consideration both cultural diversity and the confluence of multiple cultural perspectives. The AIAR core curriculum—originally built on the foundations of the interdisciplinary field of ethnomusicology—emphasizes the importance of intercultural, ethnographic, and arts-based research practices, and trains students with the skills necessary to pursue research in community-based and collaborative interdisciplinary and interprofessional settings.

Through the AIAR program, we aim to prepare students interested in the arts for exciting careers in interdisciplinary academic research and/or applied work in the public sector.

Applied Intercultural Arts Research Program Bylaws

PREAMBLE

Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs (GIDPs) report to the Dean of the Graduate College, through the Faculty Director of GIDPs.

The Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) in Applied Intercultural Arts Research offers a M.A., and a Ph.D.  In the following Articles and Bylaws, operating procedures, and policies of the Program are outlined. This organization and its structure must conform to the guidelines for GIDPs.

Article 1. Faculty Membership in the Applied Intercultural Arts Research GIDP

Membership in the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Intercultural Arts Research is open to faculty at the University of Arizona who hold a terminal degree in a discipline related to AIAR. Both tenured or tenure-eligible faculty and untenured or non-tenure-eligible faculty may hold memberships. Members of the AIAR GIDP are expected to participate in developing and maintaining the GIDP, mentoring AIAR students, teaching courses open to AIAR students, and supporting AIAR related programming. All members of the Graduate Faculty in Applied Intercultural Arts Research shall have the endorsement to chair doctoral committees.

Criteria for membership include experience with interdisciplinary research as well as activity and excellence in research or mentoring demonstrated by research funding, publication records, research/creative activity, and service as advisors to students. Members of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program will be reviewed periodically by the Executive Committee to ensure that they continue to meet these standards.

Membership can be proposed by candidates themselves or through nomination by a current member of the Program. Consideration of candidacy is initiated by submission of a CV and a letter of commitment to the Chair of the AIAR GIDP.  If the Executive Committee votes to recommend membership, a request is then submitted to the Faculty Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs for approval and appointment.

Article 2. Executive Committee (EC), and Chair of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Intercultural Arts Research.

A. Executive Committee of the Applied Intercultural Arts Research GIDP

The GIDP in Applied Intercultural Arts Research is administered by a Chair and an Executive Committee (EC), consisting of at least five members. The Executive Committee should include at least two members from the Fred Fox School of Music and two other members from other Schools within the College of Fine Arts. The Executive Committee will be made up of faculty members from at least three colleges, ideally with members from all participating colleges. The EC members are appointed for renewable two-or-three-year staggered terms.

The Chair of the Applied Intercultural Arts Research GIDP will be appointed by the Faculty Director of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs. The Chair will serve a renewable five-year term. At the end of a Chair’s term, the EC will forward nominations to the GIDP Administration, who will conduct the election of the new Chair.

The Chair and EC members will be chosen by a vote by participating faculty who hold regular memberships. Nominations from participating faculty for both positions will be received by the EC. 51% of the members will constitute a quorum. Decisions will be determined by a majority vote of those present at a meeting or by a 51% return of ballots. The roster of elected members will be forwarded to the Faculty Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs for approval and appointment. The EC votes are recommendations to the Faculty Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs, who makes the final appointments.

The Executive Committee will also have one student member elected by the students for a renewable one-year term. The student may not vote on faculty membership or participate in decisions about other students such as admissions or annual evaluation.

  • The responsibilities of the Executive Committee are to:

    3. Review new applicants to the M.A. and Ph.D. programs and work with AIAR affiliate faculty members to identify and place students with an appropriate incoming faculty advisor prior to admission to the GIDP;
    4. Appoint a student progress committee to review the annual progress reports of current students in its degree programs;
    5. Appoint other ad hoc committees within the EC and standing committees from the membership at large as needed for effective operation;
    6. Prepare and submit annual reports of program’s activities and accomplishments to the Faculty Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs;
    7. Ensure that regular academic program reviews are carried out, consistent with the Board of Regents requirements and those of the University of Arizona;

    4. Serve as representative of the Applied Intercultural Arts Research GIDP to entities such as the University Administration, granting agencies, prospective students.
