A short talk by a recipient of a Carter Travel Award is also part of the program. The Carter Travel Award is named for Herbert E. Carter, one of the founding directors of the GIDP. The Carter Travel award is opened for applications for 4 open sessions each academic year. Approximately 20 students are selected from nearly 40 applicants each year and can receive up to $600 to be applied toward some of the expenses related to travel.
The University’s GIDPs provide stimulus, cohesion and visibility to the scholarly and scientific activities of nearly 800 faculty members engaged in interdisciplinary research and graduate education at The University of Arizona. The founding directors recognized this cannot effectively be conducted within traditional disciplinary borders more than 50 years ago and through their efforts a standard of a broader range of research and training was established and have endured at The University of Arizona. The collaborative relationship between colleges across campus and the 18 GIDPs creates unique opportunities for more than 300 students enrolled in a GIDP to pursue and realize their aspirations in new research bringing about change serving the community and the world.
